APA das Emerências:

One of the main goals of IEBMA, is to keep as a Natural Reserve, the last large continuous portion of Mata Atlantica in the Buzios region. This comes as aid to the difficult job of preserving the remnants of Mata Atlantica, that in old days occupied the entire coastal region of Rio de Janeiro state,( today only isolated patches exist).

A preliminary study of the region, by Dr. Janis Roze and Dr. Amanda Bernal, of the City University of New York, showed the presence of valuable stretches of nearly virgin Mata. The ecosystem has specimens that are characteristic of Mata Atlantica, together with typical elements of other Brazilian ecosystems, giving us a very particular and little known type of ecosystem.

At the same time, the area shows signs of human impact, such as a diminuation of bird population (, probably due to the use of high quantities of insecticides in adjacent areas), and a partial felling of aboriginal trees in intermediate zones (with replacement with exotic species such as eucalyptus ). In general, the region is suffering from poorly directed activities of agriculture and tourism, causing an indiscriminate felling of trees. There is a direct correlation between vegetative coverage and availibility of drinking water.

Regarding this situation , IEBMA is focusing its efforts to create a Natural Reserve. To do this, Buzios Bauen Ecoresort (BBE) will establish on private lands an RPPN ( ), that will be administered and supervised by IEBMA.

This is only the initial response to the growing uproar for the preservation of the region, taking care to keep intact its natural beauty: Mata, beaches and sea. Inhabitants of BBE, as well as the inhabitants of Búzios, willingly participate in programs not only to prevent the continuing degradation , but also are attempting to revert the damage, restoring the land to its original state. The main objetive will always be the revalidation of the joy of life as found here, combined with the sensitivity for Nature through knowledge of its traditions
